CREATE YOUR OWN EBOOK

Creating an Ebook is not as hard as you may think. You can compile it in many different ways. I have compiled many books in three main formats. The first is using a software package called Ebook Generator.  I have also compiled it in a free format called SbookBuilder which we will look at in this tutorial. The third and most poular format is PDF which you can look at in the section called PDF. The software for this is also quite expensive though Adobe will format it for you with a limit of three uses. I have found some great free software that allows you to produce your document in PDF for free.

Creating your first eBook

The first thing is to download the SbookBuilder10 software. SbookBuilder creates a standalone HTML viewer executable of a directory and all the html, images and sound files in it, with just a few button clicks. Frames support, zoomable print preview and printing of selected pages, custom start page, HTML interface, custom Icon and windows title, optional password protection, special print page-break tag. NEW: Cascading Style Sheet support. Obviously free compilers are not as nice or have as many features as the free one however it still makes a pretty good ebook.

Organization is the key

To make it easy to compile your eBooks I suggest you put all your files in the one directory. I also suggest you write it with a program that will create stand alone files such as Front Page Express or Netscape Composer. You can use any software you like as long as it will make files without a whole lot of extra info.

With this compiler it is not so critical, however I have found it easier to control the production using this method. Just use the sort button to organise into the various extensions eg GIF's, JPEG, HTML etc. Make sure your navigation structure is set up for a book. This sometimes is different to a web page so think it through first.

Test before you have a go.

One of the best ways to see what you need to do is to build a few very simple web pages first and then compile them. You will quickly notice if you can navigate through the pages easily. If you don't know how to make web pages then do the workshop in this book.

Compiling is the final phase.

The final step is to compile the book. There are only six steps to compiling a book. When you open up the program you will notice a row of six buttons.

1. Click on the first button called "Directory" and select the folder that all your files are stored in.
   

2. Click on the "Homepage" button and select the page you want to be your starting page.
   

3. When you click on the "Title Button" you will be asked for a title for your book. This will be the name in the top left hand corner of your pages.
   

4. Password is exactly what it says and allows you to enter a password to enter the book.
   

5. The "Icon" button enables you to provide and Icon to go next to your book name in the top left hand corner.
   

6. The final stage is to create your book. Here you will also be asked what name you want to give to the file.

Links in the book.

When you compile the book you will notice it has removed all the underscores of the links and replaces them with a mouseover command. That means that when you move your mouse over the link it changes colour. It will be important for you to either have your links separated by bold text or set your link colours page properties. I had to make two books because in the main version I wanted to stay with the Brown theme which if the links are underlined were quite visible. When I compiled my Sbook copy I could hardly see any of the links. I went back and changed the links to teal and this made them more accessible.
