EMAIL SIGNATURE FILES by Empowerism

In case you are new to the Internet and aren't sure, a signature tag is a 3- to 6-line message automatically included at the end of your email.  It is a universally accepted form of letting everyone know what you do and where your site is.  It can also be called a "sig tag" or "sig line."

Every time you send an email or post a question or answer to someone's question in a discussion group (forum) your 'sig' tag should be included at the end of your message.

One of the easiest things in the world for you to do is join a discussion list.  Find something that interests you and get on a discussion list that talks about it.  Cars, pets, law, quilting, boats, computers, hiking, jogging, cameras, motorcycles, parenting, skiing, football, dolls, cooking, and so on.

Don't know where to start?  Here are four links that will tell you everything you need to know about discussion lists, newsgroup lists, and email forums. Chances are, if your hobby or interest isn't listed here, you might need a new hobby!

http://www.listtool.com (A service for finding and subscribing to discussion lists. Also provides a good list of resources.)

http://www.reference.com (Newsgroup directory, mailing list directory, web forum directory. They also maintain archives of postings from some mailing list discussion groups.)

http://www.lsoft.com/lists/listref.html (Search for a mailing list from a database of more than 24,000 lists. View lists by host country. View lists with 10,000 subscribers or more. View lists with 1,000 subscribers or more.)

http://www.liszt.com (More than 90,000 lists to choose from. You can also browse topic-specific categories of discussion lists.)

Join as many lists as you want.  Remember, the more you join, the more potential exposure you will have for your signature tag.  Then start participating in the discussions when you have something to add.  Try to find something to say almost everyday in as many of them as you can comfortably do.

Make your posts to these lists respectful and intelligent. People who jump into a forum or mailing list discussion and blast out some craziness just to get their sig line seen are not doing themselves any favors.  Contribute something real.  Believe me, every forum on the net NEEDS people who will take the time to say something that would actually help someone. The more people actually like your post the better the chance they will visit your site.  If you can get them to read to the end of your post, they will be 100 times more apt to be interested in your signature line as well.

Every time you send an email to a discussion or news group, your signature tag will lead possibly hundreds of people to your site!  How many depends on two things 1) How big the list is, and 2) How good your 'sig' tag is!

An example signature file might look like this:

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
COMPLETE WEBSITE TRAINING
Comprehensive CD
http://www.mywebsitemanual.com
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Remember to always use http:// in your URLs to make sure your web address comes through as a link that can easily be accessed.  Also, don't use more than 60 characters per line.

The concept is simple - you talk, you post, you ask, you post, you help, you post . . . and you keep doing this all over the Internet as much as you can while your signature is added to every post you make!

Like everything else on the Internet, it's a numbers game. The more posts you have out there the more people will be led to your site and the more money you will make.

Discussion lists are where much of your action will come from. Some of these lists have 1000's of readers who talk about everything from making money to building web sites.

One thing to note: A signature file won't work if it's not out there so people can see it.   It's up to you to make your sig known. If you join a discussion list with 50,000 people on it and become active in the discussions, that's 50,000 people who have the opportunity to go to your site - 50,000 eyes reading what you are saying!

MOST BROWSERS HAVE A SIG FILE FEATURE

Netscape Communicator instructions:

~ First you must create the sig file as a text file
(Note Pad is excellent for this). For an example, you
   might call it mysig.txt.
~ Then choose EDIT from the Taskbar (options on top of
the browser page) and click on Preferences.
~ Then choose Mail & Groups, then choose Identity.
~ There you will find a box that you can enter the
location of your sig file.  It has to be the exact
location on your hard drive. Probably something like
    C:\WINDOWS\mysig.txt or C:\mydocuments\mysig.txt or
whatever you name your signature file.

Outlook Express instructions:

~ Choose Tools
~ Choose Stationery
~ Choose Signature.
~ You can either type your sig line in the box provided
or choose the File option where you would insert the
location and name of your pre-written signature file.

Important!  Send yourself a few messages to make sure your signature tag looks the way you want it to!!  This is VERY important!!  Keep tweaking it until it looks just the way you want it to.

Lets now have a look at E-zines

eMailStripper - http://papercut.biz/emailStripper.htm
I can't stand getting forwards with all those extra >'s in them. I use this when I forward messages so others don't have to dicipher the email. It's also great if you want to clean something up to use in your ezine, etc. Free program for cleaning the ">" and other formatting characters out of your emails. It will restore "forwarded" or "replied" emails back to their original state so they're easier to read.
